This morning I actually got to open the windows and let some cool fresh air in the house, Yaaa! This is the first day of cool that lets me know fall is on it's way, Praise the Lord! And today we got to go to Bee City for our first LCHEA field trip of the year.
Upon arrival Koi and Claira got to fill up bear shaped jars with honey, and make a bees wax figurine by pouring melted wax into a mold. Then we went into the classroom and learned all there is to know about bees, their hives, their life span, their jobs, their wings, their wax glands, their behavior etc... It was very interesting. God is so creative, just learning a small bit about Bees confirms that we have a Creator who is very much into details. These are the details that make everything run like clockwork that scientists can not explain and without them, no thing could go on existing.
The Queen Bee for instance. She lays 2000 eggs a day. She inspects every cell before laying each egg. If the cell is larger, she will lay a boy egg in it. She can determine what the sex of the egg is by either fertilizing it, which makes a girl bee or not fertilizing it which makes a boy bee. There is not much use for boy bees so she doesn't make nearly as many of them. Once a year the hive "swarms"and the queen bee will fly away with half of the hive to start a new hive. But before she leaves, the worker bees create special pods to put new girl eggs into to make more queen bees. The workers have to choose freshly laid eggs, put them in the special pods and feed them "royal jelly" (a substance that comes out of a special gland on the bee's head) instead of regular honey or nectar that they feed all the other bees. They will make up to 8 queen bees but the first to hatch goes around and stings all the other queen bees to kill them since there can only be one queen per hive. The queen bee has a straight stinger so she can sting as many times as she wants without getting hurt, unlike a worker bee that dies after stinging something or someone because their stinger is like a fish hook that gets stuck in the victim, when they try to fly away, it pretty much dismembers them. Yikes.
These things don't just "happen" There is a divine, incredibly imaginative creator who thought this up, and carried it out to insure survival for His entire creation. And this is just a tiny part of His creation. Imagine the Universe! reproduction! DNA! microorganisms! the variety of plants, flowers, animals, bugs, sea creatures, just to name a few. Such enormous variety, such amazingly complex organisms. Such an amazing Creator!
Bee City doesn't stop with Bees. They have a very impressive petting zoo that is filled with exotic animals. We enjoyed looking at monkeys, lemurs, emu, wild African cats, cavies, exotic pheasants, goats, llamas, snakes, turtles, frogs, lizards, fish, bunnies, ponies, wallaby, turkeys, chickens, etc...
It was entertaining, the Lord blessed us with beautiful weather and we got some yummy honey, lip balm and lotion made with bees wax and royal jelly. And some honey filled chocolates...YUM!
It was a far drive, but it will be a nice enjoyable yearly field trip for many years to come. ;)
